Weid (Ulster)
Weid (pronounced /wiːd/) is a Northern Irish word, predominantly used in Ulster, meaning "weed." It is a direct cognate of the English word "weed," sharing a common Germanic ancestor. The word generally refers to unwanted plants growing in a garden, field, or other cultivated area. Its usage is largely consistent with the standard English definition of "weed." While "weed" is also commonly used in Ulster, "weid" retains a distinctive local flavour and is readily understood throughout the region. The term might also be used more broadly to describe anything considered undesirable or troublesome.
