SS Berlin
The SS Berlin was the name of several German passenger ships, the most notable being:
-
SS Berlin (1908): An ocean liner built by A.G. Weser of Bremen for the Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL) shipping company. She served on the transatlantic route between Germany and North America. During World War I, she was converted into an auxiliary cruiser and renamed SMS Hilfskreuzer Berlin. She was used to lay mines in the Atlantic and later interned in Norway after seeking refuge there. After the war, she was returned to NDL and resumed passenger service until she was scrapped in 1922.
-
SS Berlin (1925): A passenger liner built by Bremer Vulkan for NDL. This Berlin was a motor vessel (MV) and served on routes to South America and elsewhere. During World War II, she was used as a hospital ship and later as accommodation for naval personnel. She was seized by the Soviet Union after the war and renamed Admiral Nakhimov. In 1986, she collided with the bulk carrier Pyotr Vasev in the Black Sea and sank with significant loss of life. This disaster is sometimes referred to as the "Soviet Titanic."
