Sun (heraldry)
In heraldry, the sun is a common charge, typically depicted as a golden (or) disc with a human face surrounded by rays. When depicted with a face, it is referred to as a "sun in splendour" or simply a "sun in his splendour." The number of rays varies, and they can be straight, wavy, or alternating.
The sun symbolizes glory, brilliance, splendour, majesty, and life. It can also represent reason, intellect, and justice. As a celestial body, it often alludes to enlightenment and guidance.
The position of the sun on the shield is typically in chief (the upper part of the shield), but it can appear in other locations as well. A "sun rising" is depicted as half a sun appearing above the horizon, usually from the sea or hills.
The sun's tincture is most frequently gold (or), but it can also appear in other colours depending on the design and the blazon (heraldic description).
The sun is found in the arms of numerous families, cities, and nations around the world. Its usage is widespread and varied, reflecting its powerful symbolism.
