Janez Janša (visual artist)
Janez Janša (visual artist), often referred to as Janez Janša (born as Davide Grassi), is a Slovenian performance artist, filmmaker, and producer. He is known for legally changing his name to Janez Janša in 2007, along with two other artists, in protest against the political figure of the same name, the then-Prime Minister of Slovenia, Janez Janša (politician). This act of name change became a central element of his artistic practice, blurring the lines between personal identity, political commentary, and institutional critique.
His work frequently engages with themes of identity, authorship, the political implications of artistic practice, and the influence of media and technology on society. He explores these themes through performance, video, installation, and participatory projects, often involving the public.
Prior to legally changing his name, he worked under the name Davide Grassi and was involved in filmmaking and video art. After the name change, his artistic endeavors were often presented collaboratively under the "Janez Janša" collective, although his individual contribution remained significant.
Janez Janša (visual artist) has exhibited and performed internationally at various festivals, galleries, and museums. His work has been the subject of critical analysis and has contributed to discussions about the role of art in contemporary political discourse.
