Hugh of Chalon (bishop of Auxerre)

Hugh of Chalon (died 13 August 1220) was the Bishop of Auxerre from 1206 until his death. He was a member of the House of Chalon, a powerful noble family in Burgundy.

Before becoming bishop, Hugh served as the Archdeacon of Langres. His election to the see of Auxerre in 1206 followed a period of vacancy after the death of his predecessor, William of Toucy.

Hugh's episcopate was marked by involvement in various political and ecclesiastical affairs of the time. He participated in councils and synods, and dealt with issues relating to the governance of the diocese. He also engaged in disputes concerning the rights and privileges of the Church.

His lineage connected him to prominent figures such as Count William IV of Chalon, and his familial connections played a role in the political landscape of the region.

Hugh died on August 13, 1220, and was succeeded as Bishop of Auxerre by William of Seignelay. His tenure, though not extensively documented, reflects the typical activities and challenges faced by bishops in the high medieval period.
