Robert Wingfield (diplomat)
Robert Wingfield (died 1509) was an English diplomat in the service of King Henry VII. He played a significant role in negotiating treaties and alliances during Henry's reign, particularly with the Holy Roman Empire and the Low Countries.
Wingfield came from a prominent Suffolk family. He served as a member of Parliament for Great Yarmouth in 1472 and for Suffolk in 1491. His diplomatic career began in the late 15th century, and he was frequently dispatched on missions to the continent.
Key achievements included his involvement in the negotiations surrounding the marriage of Margaret Tudor, Henry VII's daughter, to James IV of Scotland. He was also instrumental in securing treaties aimed at preventing Perkin Warbeck, the pretender to the English throne, from receiving support from foreign powers.
Wingfield served as the English ambassador to Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, and frequently corresponded with Henry VII on matters of state. He was known for his diligence and his ability to navigate the complex political landscape of late medieval Europe. His contributions were vital in establishing England's position on the European stage during the reign of Henry VII.
His will was proved in 1509. He left behind a legacy of dedicated service to the crown and a record of successful diplomatic endeavors.
