2/3rd Pioneer Battalion (Australia)
The 2/3rd Pioneer Battalion was an Australian Army infantry battalion raised for service during the Second World War as part of the all-volunteer Second Australian Imperial Force. Formed in May 1940, the battalion drew personnel from the states of Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. It was assigned to the 7th Division and primarily served in the Middle East and New Guinea.
The 2/3rd Pioneers initially took part in the Syria-Lebanon campaign in 1941, playing a vital role in bridging obstacles for advancing Allied forces. Following this, they were deployed to defend against the Japanese advance in New Guinea. During the Battle of Milne Bay in August–September 1942, the battalion helped to construct defenses and supported the fighting troops. Later, they participated in the fighting around Buna–Gona, contributing to the grueling advance through difficult terrain.
In 1943, the 2/3rd Pioneer Battalion returned to Australia for rest and reorganization. Subsequently, they were deployed again to New Guinea in late 1943, taking part in the advance towards Shaggy Ridge as part of the Finisterre Range campaign. The battalion was disbanded in February 1946 after the cessation of hostilities. The 2/3rd Pioneer Battalion was awarded several battle honours for its service during the war.
