Geologist (musician)

Geologist is the professional name of Brian Weitz (born June 9, 1978), an American musician best known as a founding member of the experimental pop band Animal Collective.

Weitz's primary role in Animal Collective involves creating sonic textures and atmospheres using samplers, synthesizers, and effects pedals. He is noted for his intricate and often abstract soundscapes that form a core element of the band's distinctive sound. He rarely uses traditional instruments.

Prior to forming Animal Collective (originally known as the Automaton Collective) with Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), and Deakin (Josh Dibb), Weitz attended Park School of Baltimore and later transferred to Pikesville High School. He later studied at Columbia University, where he focused on environmental science. His interest in geology and the natural world is reflected in his stage name and sometimes influences the band's thematic content.

Outside of Animal Collective, Geologist has also been involved in various other music projects and collaborations. He has additionally worked on remixing tracks for other artists and has curated compilations. He is known for his quiet demeanor and reluctance towards personal publicity, often preferring to let the music speak for itself.
