Quadrangle (architecture)

A quadrangle, often shortened to "quad," is a four-sided enclosed area, often rectangular or square, that is surrounded by buildings, typically forming part of a larger structure such as a college, university, monastery, or other institutional complex. The buildings surrounding the quadrangle usually face inward toward the open space, creating a sense of enclosure and community.
