Bugbug

Bugbug is a Philippine term, predominantly used in the Pampanga region, referring to a mentally challenged or cognitively impaired individual. The term is often considered derogatory and insensitive due to its association with mocking or belittling individuals with intellectual disabilities. It carries a strong negative connotation.

The origins of the word are uncertain, but it likely arose from observational descriptions of behaviors associated with cognitive impairment. Use of the term is discouraged in favor of more respectful and accurate language, such as "person with intellectual disability" or other specific clinical terms when appropriate. Social awareness campaigns in the Philippines actively promote the use of inclusive and respectful language to avoid perpetuating stigma and discrimination against individuals with disabilities. While still occasionally heard, particularly in older generations or rural areas, its use is diminishing as awareness of its harmful nature increases.
