Jamie Barton (singer)
Jamie Barton (born October 17, 1981) is an American operatic mezzo-soprano known for her powerful voice, dramatic stage presence, and advocacy for body positivity and inclusivity in the opera world.
Barton was raised in Rome, Georgia. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from Shorter College and a Master of Music degree from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music.
Her career has included performances at leading opera houses worldwide, including the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Royal Opera House (Covent Garden), and Bavarian State Opera. Her repertoire spans a wide range of roles, from baroque to contemporary opera, including Fricka in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, Eboli in Verdi's Don Carlo, Adalgisa in Bellini's Norma, and Azucena in Verdi's Il trovatore.
Barton has received numerous awards and accolades, including the 2015 Richard Tucker Award, the 2017 Beverly Sills Artist Award, and the 2020 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera. She is an outspoken advocate for body positivity, mental health awareness, and LGBTQ+ rights within the opera industry and beyond. She frequently uses her platform to promote greater diversity and inclusivity in classical music.
