Stokhid
Stokhid (Стохід in Ukrainian) refers to a river in northwestern Ukraine, a right tributary of the Prypiat River. It flows through the Volyn Oblast.
The Stokhid is characterized by its low banks, slow current, and numerous meanders and oxbow lakes, often traversing marshy and heavily forested terrain. Its total length is approximately 188 kilometers (117 miles). The river's watershed covers an area of 3,150 square kilometers (1,220 square miles).
Historically, the Stokhid has served as a natural boundary and played a role in local transportation and resource use. It is also notable for its ecological significance, supporting diverse flora and fauna adapted to the wetland environment. The river is of strategic importance, particularly from a geographic perspective, owing to its significant length.
The name "Stokhid" is believed to be of Slavic origin, although its precise etymology is debated. Theories suggest connections to words related to "stand," "flow," or "hundred," potentially reflecting the river's characteristics or historical significance.
