Zoster (Attica)

Zoster was an ancient coastal deme of Attica, belonging to the phyle Leontis. Its location is generally accepted to be near the modern settlement of Anavyssos, on the southwestern coast of Attica, south of Athens. Zoster was known for its temple dedicated to Leto, Artemis, and Apollo. The epithet "Zosteria" was applied to Artemis in this location, possibly referencing a local legend or feature. Pausanias describes the temple in his Description of Greece, mentioning its religious significance and proximity to the sea. The name "Zoster" itself possibly relates to a "girdle" or "belt," perhaps referring to the shape of the coastline or a mythical association. The deme's history is tied to the broader history of Attica, participating in the political and social life of ancient Athens.
