GE U28CG

The GE U28CG was a 2,800 horsepower (2,100 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by General Electric between 1966 and 1968. It was specifically designed to operate on passenger trains, incorporating features suitable for that service. These features distinguished it from standard freight locomotives and included head-end power (HEP) for providing electricity to passenger cars for lighting, heating, and air conditioning.

The "U" in its designation stands for "Universal," referring to GE's line of locomotives designed for both freight and passenger service, although the U28CG was primarily passenger-oriented. "28" indicates its horsepower rating of 2,800. "C" denotes a six-axle configuration (C-C), and "G" signifies General Electric.

Primarily, the U28CG was purchased by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF). These locomotives were instrumental in hauling Santa Fe's passenger trains, including the famous Super Chief and El Capitan. The U28CGs were eventually retired from passenger service as Amtrak took over most intercity passenger rail operations in the United States in 1971. Some were later used in freight service or sold to other railroads. The U28CG is considered a relatively rare locomotive model compared to other GE locomotives of the same era.
