Herkimer (village), New York

Herkimer is a village located in Herkimer County, New York, United States. It is the county seat of Herkimer County. The village lies within the Town of Herkimer, immediately south of the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90).

History:

The village of Herkimer's history is closely tied to that of the surrounding town and county. The area was originally inhabited by the Mohawk people. European settlement began in the early 18th century, with the arrival of Palatine German immigrants. The village is named after Johan Jost Herkimer (or Herchemer), a prominent early settler and Palatine German immigrant who established a gristmill and sawmill in the area.

During the American Revolutionary War, the area was strategically important. The Battle of Oriskany, a pivotal battle fought on August 6, 1777, took place approximately six miles west of the present-day village. General Nicholas Herkimer, Johan Jost Herkimer's son, led the Patriot militia forces at Oriskany and died from wounds sustained in the battle.

The village was incorporated in 1828. Its location along the Mohawk River and later the Erie Canal contributed to its early growth and prosperity.

Geography:

Herkimer village is situated on the south bank of the Mohawk River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of approximately 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2), all of it land.

As of the most recent census, Herkimer has a population of around 7,500 residents. The population density is high. The racial makeup of the village is primarily White, with smaller percentages of African Americans, Asian Americans, and other racial groups.
