Lazarus (comics)
Lazarus is a comic book series created by Greg Rucka and Michael Lark, published by Image Comics beginning in 2013. The series is set in a dystopian near future where the world is controlled by sixteen wealthy and powerful families, known as the Families, who divide up the Earth's resources and territories amongst themselves. The vast majority of the population are serfs or waste, with no rights or recourse against the Families.
The central character is Forever Carlyle, the Lazarus of the Carlyle Family. A Lazarus is a genetically engineered warrior and the personal protector and enforcer of their Family. They are typically the most skilled fighter and tactician the Family possesses, acting as their judge, jury, and executioner. Forever is fiercely loyal to her Family, but begins to question her origins and the morality of the world order as the series progresses.
The core themes of Lazarus revolve around issues of class warfare, genetic engineering, corporate power, and the human cost of inequality. The series explores the moral complexities of loyalty, identity, and the lengths to which people will go to survive in a world devoid of justice.
The worldbuilding in Lazarus is extensive, with detailed descriptions of the various Families, their territories, resources, and political relationships. The series also delves into the scientific and technological advancements that have shaped the dystopian future.
Lazarus is critically acclaimed for its compelling characters, intricate plot, and thought-provoking themes. It is noted for its realistic depiction of a future shaped by climate change, resource scarcity, and unchecked corporate power. The artwork by Michael Lark contributes significantly to the series' dark and gritty atmosphere.
