Territorial Defence Forces (Ukraine)
Territorial Defence Forces (TDF) (Ukrainian: Територіальна оборона України, romanized: Teritorialʹna oborona Ukraïny) are volunteer military formations in Ukraine responsible for defending specific territories within the country. They are a component of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, distinct from the regular army, and operate under the overall command of the Ministry of Defence.
Formation and Role
The TDF were established in 2014 in response to the Russian annexation of Crimea and the start of the War in Donbas. Initially formed as a largely volunteer force, they played a significant role in defending against the initial Russian-backed separatist offensive. Their role has expanded since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, taking on increased responsibilities including:
- Territorial Defence: Protecting specific regions and localities from enemy incursions, sabotage, and reconnaissance.
- Supporting Regular Forces: Assisting the regular army with logistical support, security operations, and combat actions when required.
- Civil Defence: Participating in civilian protection activities, such as disaster relief and evacuation efforts.
- Reconnaissance and Intelligence Gathering: Providing local knowledge and intelligence to support military operations.
Organization and Structure
The TDF are organized into battalions and brigades, often mirroring the administrative divisions of Ukraine's regions and oblasts. Each unit is typically commanded by officers from the Ukrainian Armed Forces, supplemented by experienced volunteer leaders. While largely composed of volunteers, the TDF now benefit from formal training and equipment supplied by the Ukrainian government and international partners.
Recruitment and Training
Membership in the TDF is voluntary, with individuals undergoing a period of basic military training before deployment. Training encompasses weapon handling, tactical skills, first aid, and other essential military competencies. The training intensity and duration vary depending on the specific needs and circumstances.
Equipment
The TDF initially relied on a mix of donated, captured, and locally sourced weapons and equipment. However, with increased international support, they have received a wider range of modern weaponry, vehicles, and communication systems.
Legacy and Significance
The TDF's role in the defense of Ukraine has been significant, particularly in the early phases of the 2022 Russian invasion and in slowing the advance of Russian forces in various regions. Their contributions, often alongside regular army units and other volunteer groups, have been crucial in resisting the Russian aggression. The resilience and effectiveness of the TDF have been widely acknowledged.
