Thomas Parker (minister)

Thomas Parker (1595 – 1677) was an English Puritan minister and theologian who emigrated to the American colonies.

Born in Wiltshire, England, Parker was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford. He became a highly respected scholar of Hebrew and a prominent Puritan voice. Due to increasing religious persecution under Archbishop William Laud, Parker left England and arrived in New England in 1634.

Parker initially settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts, where he assisted his cousin, Rev. James Noyes. In 1637, he moved to Newbury, Massachusetts, where he served as the co-pastor, alongside Noyes, of the First Parish Church of Newbury for over four decades.

Parker was a staunch Calvinist and a strong advocate for Congregationalism. He was known for his intellectual rigor, his dedication to biblical scholarship, and his powerful preaching. He also played a key role in the development of education in the colonies, mentoring numerous students who went on to become ministers themselves.

Among his notable writings are theological treatises and sermons. He was also actively involved in the theological controversies of his time, particularly concerning church polity and the proper interpretation of scripture. Thomas Parker died in Newbury in 1677, leaving behind a significant legacy as a leading figure in the early Puritan community of New England.
