Tong Prefecture (Shaanxi)
Tong Prefecture (同州, Tóngzhōu), also known historically as Tongzhou, was a prefecture (zhou) in imperial China, located in what is now part of Shaanxi province. Its administrative seat was generally located in what is now Dali County.
The history of Tong Prefecture spans several dynasties, experiencing changes in jurisdiction and administrative status. It served as an important strategic location due to its position in the Guanzhong region and its proximity to the Yellow River.
During various periods, the prefecture was administered as part of different circuits (dao). The specific boundaries and subordinate counties of Tong Prefecture varied throughout history, influenced by political and territorial changes. The economic activities within the prefecture primarily revolved around agriculture, trade, and local crafts.
The historical significance of Tong Prefecture is linked to its role in the defense of the imperial capital, Chang'an (present-day Xi'an), and its participation in regional trade networks. Numerous historical figures and events were associated with Tong Prefecture during its existence.
Later, the prefecture was reorganized or renamed during different dynastic changes, eventually ceasing to exist as Tong Prefecture. Traces of its historical presence remain in the local culture and historical sites of the region.
