Horenbout

Horenbout is the surname of a family of Flemish Renaissance artists who worked as painters, illuminators, and tapestry designers, primarily active in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Notable members include:

  • Gerard Horenbout (c. 1465 – 1540/41): Also known as Gerard Hornebolte, he was a leading manuscript illuminator and painter based in Ghent. He is considered one of the most important artists of the Ghent-Bruges school of illumination. He is credited with contributing to works like the Grimani Breviary and the Hours of Joanna I of Castile.

  • Susanna Horenbout (c. 1503 – c. 1554): A female artist, Susanna was a painter, miniaturist, and illuminator who worked at the English court of Henry VIII. She is one of the earliest known female artists to have worked in England and is known for her portrait miniatures.

  • Lucas Horenbout (c. 1490/95 – 1544): A painter and miniaturist, Lucas was also active at the English court of Henry VIII. He is credited with popularizing the portrait miniature in England. He is believed to have taught Hans Holbein the Younger the art of miniature painting.

The Horenbout family's artistic contributions are significant in the fields of manuscript illumination and early portrait miniature painting. Their work reflects the transition from late medieval styles to the Renaissance aesthetic. Their influence can be seen in the development of miniature painting techniques and the establishment of courtly artistic traditions in England.
