Marrow (character)

Marrow, also known as Sarah Rushman, is a fictional character appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics, primarily in those featuring the X-Men. Created by Scott Lobdell and Joe Madureira, she first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #325 (August 1995).

Marrow is a mutant with the ability to control her skeletal structure, causing bones to grow out of her skin and become weapons or armor. These external bone growths are constantly regenerating, and she can control their growth and placement. Her appearance is often considered grotesque, marked by protruding bones.

Originally a member of the violent mutant terrorist group Gene Nation, which sought revenge on humanity for the treatment of the Morlocks, Marrow held a deep-seated resentment towards humans. Gene Nation was formed in the aftermath of the Mutant Massacre, led by the remaining Morlocks seeking retribution.

Marrow was later recruited by the X-Men, initially serving under their tutelage as a volatile and sometimes uncontrollable member. Her time with the X-Men saw her struggle to reconcile her past with her new role as a hero. She has often wrestled with questions of identity and acceptance, dealing with both her physical mutations and her violent upbringing.

Over the years, Marrow has been involved with various mutant-related storylines, often finding herself on opposing sides. She has been both a hero and a villain, representing the complex and often morally ambiguous nature of mutant existence in the Marvel Universe. Her mutant powers have also fluctuated, sometimes diminishing or even disappearing entirely before returning. Her character has evolved over time, attempting to find a balance between her destructive tendencies and her desire for acceptance and a meaningful existence.
