Okolište (Neolithic site)
Okolište is a Neolithic settlement site located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, specifically near Visoko. It is considered one of the largest and most significant Butmir culture settlements in the region, dating back to the Late Neolithic period, roughly between 5200 and 4500 BC.
The site is characterized by its tell-like structure, formed by successive layers of habitation over centuries. Excavations at Okolište have revealed evidence of sophisticated architectural planning, including large houses, organised streets, and defensive structures. The presence of fortifications suggests a complex social organization and potential inter-group conflicts during this period.
Key finds from Okolište include pottery, tools made of stone and bone, and evidence of agricultural practices, particularly the cultivation of cereals and animal husbandry. The ceramic artifacts are particularly noteworthy, displaying characteristic Butmir motifs and decorative techniques.
The study of Okolište provides crucial insights into the lifestyle, social structure, and cultural achievements of Neolithic populations in the Balkans and contributes to our understanding of the Neolithic transition in Europe. The site's size and complexity indicate a significant population density and a level of social organization not always associated with Neolithic societies. Further research and preservation efforts are essential to fully understand and protect this important archaeological site.
