USS Weber

The USS Weber (DE-757) was a Cannon-class destroyer escort built for the United States Navy during World War II. She was named for Ensign Walter Weber, Jr., who was killed in action during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Weber was launched on March 25, 1944, by the Western Pipe & Steel Company, San Pedro, California; sponsored by Mrs. Walter Weber, Jr., widow of Ensign Weber; and commissioned on July 29, 1944, Lieutenant Commander P. R. Louzeau, USNR, in command.

After shakedown off California, Weber reported to Seattle, Washington, on September 15, 1944, to join Escort Division 60. She escorted convoys to Alaskan ports, including Dutch Harbor and Adak, until December. On December 21, she sailed for Pearl Harbor, arriving on January 1, 1945.

From January to May 1945, Weber escorted convoys between Pearl Harbor and Eniwetok, as well as operating on antisubmarine patrol in the Hawaiian Islands. On May 19, she sailed for Okinawa, arriving on June 1. She served on patrol and radar picket duty off Okinawa until the end of the war, enduring numerous air attacks.

After the cessation of hostilities, Weber assisted in the occupation of Japan, remaining in the Far East until December 1945. She then returned to the United States and was placed out of commission in reserve at Mare Island Naval Shipyard on June 3, 1946.

Weber was struck from the Navy List on January 15, 1972, and sold for scrap on November 21, 1973.

USS Weber received one battle star for her World War II service.
