Computist
A computist is a person skilled in or whose profession involves mathematical computation, especially numerical calculation. Traditionally, this term referred to individuals, often employed in observatories or scientific institutions, who performed complex calculations by hand, using mechanical calculators, or with the aid of tables. Their work was crucial for producing astronomical tables, navigational data, ballistic tables, and other sets of numerical data needed for scientific and engineering applications. Before the widespread availability of electronic computers, computists were essential for solving complex problems. The role of a computist has largely been replaced by automated computing systems, but the term is still sometimes used to describe individuals with a deep understanding of numerical methods and computational algorithms, even if they primarily use computers to perform the calculations. The historical significance of computists lies in their contribution to the advancement of science and technology through meticulous and often painstaking manual computation.
