Lekotek
A Lekotek (from the Swedish words lek meaning play and tek derived from bibliotek, meaning library) is a toy library and play center, primarily serving children with disabilities and their families. Lekoteks provide opportunities for children to learn and develop through play using specially selected toys and adaptive equipment.
The core of the Lekotek model involves therapeutic play sessions facilitated by a trained Lekotek leader. These sessions are designed to encourage children's cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. Parents and caregivers also participate in these sessions, learning how to use toys and play activities to support their child's development at home.
Lekoteks typically offer a lending library of adapted toys and assistive devices, allowing families to borrow these resources for home use. This reduces the financial burden on families who might otherwise need to purchase expensive specialized equipment.
The goal of a Lekotek is to empower children with disabilities, promote family involvement, and foster inclusion within the community. Lekoteks can be found in various countries and are often associated with non-profit organizations or healthcare institutions.
