Jeffboat
Jeffboat was a major shipbuilding company located in Jeffersonville, Indiana, USA. Established in 1834 as Howard Shipyards, it became a significant builder of steamboats, towboats, barges, and other vessels for inland waterways. The company was a key part of the Ohio River's maritime industry for over 160 years.
Throughout its history, Jeffboat adapted to changing demands, transitioning from wooden-hulled steamboats to steel-hulled towboats and barges. It played a crucial role in the transportation of goods and materials throughout the Mississippi River system and beyond. During World War II, Jeffboat contributed to the war effort by constructing LSTs (Landing Ship, Tank) for the U.S. Navy.
Ownership of the company changed hands several times over the years. In 1972, it was acquired by Texas Gas Transmission Corporation and renamed Jeffboat, Inc. Later, it was owned by American Commercial Lines, and eventually by Platinum Equity.
Jeffboat ceased operations in 2018, citing declining demand for barges and increased competition. The closure marked the end of an era for shipbuilding on the Ohio River. The shipyard site, once a bustling center of activity, remains a reminder of the region's rich maritime heritage. Jeffboat vessels continue to operate on waterways throughout the country, a testament to the quality and durability of its construction.
