Saab 9-5

The Saab 9-5 is an executive car produced by the Swedish automobile manufacturer Saab from 1997 to 2012. It replaced the Saab 9000 as the company's flagship model.

First Generation (1997–2010): The initial 9-5 (designated internally as "GM2900") was launched in 1997 and was based on the GM2900 platform, shared with the Opel Vectra. This generation was available as a four-door sedan and a five-door estate ("SportCombi"). Engine options included a range of inline-four and V6 petrol engines, as well as a diesel engine. The first generation 9-5 received facelifts in 2001 and 2005, featuring revised styling and updated features. Notable variants included the Aero, a performance-oriented version with a turbocharged engine.

Second Generation (2010–2012): The second-generation 9-5 (designated internally as "GM Epsilon II") was unveiled in 2009 and went on sale in 2010. This model was based on the GM Epsilon II platform, also used by vehicles like the Opel Insignia. It retained the sedan and estate body styles. The second generation featured a more contemporary design and offered advanced technology for its time. However, Saab's financial difficulties led to production being halted in 2011, and the company declared bankruptcy shortly thereafter. Limited production of the second-generation 9-5 continued under National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) in 2012, with a focus on electric vehicle development, before ceasing completely.

The Saab 9-5, particularly the first generation, is often praised for its safety, comfort, and distinctive Saab design elements. Despite the relatively short lifespan of the second generation, it represented Saab's ambitions to compete in the executive car market with modern technology and styling. The 9-5 is considered a significant model in Saab's history and is remembered by enthusiasts for its unique character.
