Gore Island (Baja California)
Gore Island is a small, uninhabited island located off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. Its precise location is within the Vizcaíno Bay, a large bay on the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur.
The island is primarily known for its role as a guano mining location in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Guano, the accumulated excrement of seabirds, was a valuable fertilizer, and islands rich in guano deposits were heavily exploited. Gore Island, like many other islands in the region, was stripped of its guano resources.
The island is generally considered a harsh environment, characterized by arid conditions and limited vegetation. Its rocky landscape provides habitat for seabirds and marine life, but it lacks fresh water sources.
Currently, Gore Island is not a significant economic or tourist destination. Its history as a guano mining site remains its most notable feature. Conservation efforts in the Vizcaíno Bay region often encompass the protection of seabird nesting sites, which may include Gore Island. Access to the island is generally limited and requires appropriate permits.
