Finisterre (album)
Finisterre is the third studio album by British Sea Power, released in 2005. The album's title references Finistère, the French département at the western tip of Brittany, and more generally, the idea of an ending or the edge of something.
Thematically, Finisterre explores ideas of isolation, borders (both geographic and political), and a sense of unease with contemporary society. This is reflected in both the lyrical content and the often dramatic and expansive instrumentation. The album draws on influences from post-punk, art rock, and British folk music, creating a distinctive and often cinematic sound.
Upon its release, Finisterre received widespread critical acclaim, with reviewers praising its ambitious scope, lyrical depth, and unique musical vision. It is often regarded as one of British Sea Power's most accomplished and significant works. The album helped solidify their reputation as a band willing to experiment and push the boundaries of genre. It spawned several singles, including "The Lonely" and "It Ended on an Oily Stage."
