Republic Day (Kazakhstan)

Republic Day in Kazakhstan (Kazakh: Республика Күні, Respublika Küni; Russian: День Республики, Den Respubliki) is a national holiday celebrated annually on October 25th. It commemorates the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, adopted on October 25, 1990. This declaration asserted Kazakhstan's independence within the Soviet Union and laid the groundwork for its eventual full independence following the dissolution of the USSR in December 1991.

While initially celebrated as a major public holiday with national festivities and days off, Republic Day lost its status as a national holiday in 2009 when it was reclassified as a commemorative date. This change meant that it was no longer a non-working day.

In 2022, Republic Day was reinstated as a national holiday by a decree from President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. This decision aimed to emphasize the importance of sovereignty and national identity in the country's history and to promote patriotism. The reinstatement brought back the tradition of national celebrations and a day off for the general public.
