Bernardino de Cupis (bishop)
Bernardino de Cupis (c. 1480 – 1548) was an Italian Roman Catholic cardinal and bishop. Born in Rome to a family of minor nobility, he began his career in the Papal Curia.
De Cupis was appointed Bishop of Trani in 1513 and held the position until his death. He was elevated to cardinal in 1517 by Pope Leo X as Cardinal-Priest of San Lorenzo in Lucina. He participated in several papal conclaves, including those that elected Adrian VI, Clement VII, Paul III, and Julius III.
During his career, de Cupis held several important positions within the Church, including Grand Penitentiary. He was known for his diplomatic skills and played a significant role in negotiations between the Papacy and various European powers. He served as papal legate to various regions and was involved in addressing issues related to the Protestant Reformation.
Bernardino de Cupis died in Rome in 1548 and was buried in the Basilica di San Lorenzo in Lucina. He is remembered for his long service to the Catholic Church and his contributions to papal administration and diplomacy during a turbulent period in European history.
