Emil Brix

Emil Brix is an Austrian diplomat and historian. Born in Vienna in 1956, he is known for his expertise in Central European history and international relations.

Brix studied history and German philology at the University of Vienna, earning his doctorate in 1981. He began his diplomatic career in the Austrian Foreign Ministry, holding various positions in Austria and abroad. He served as Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum in London from 1999 to 2004.

From 2010 to 2015, Brix served as the Austrian Ambassador to the United Kingdom. He subsequently served as Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna from 2015 to 2022.

Brix has published extensively on Austrian history, Central European history, and international cultural relations. His scholarly work often focuses on the Habsburg Empire and its legacy. He is a frequent commentator on current affairs, particularly those related to Europe and transatlantic relations. He has also written on the role of culture in diplomacy.
