p-Cresol
p-Cresol, also known as 4-methylphenol, is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3C6H4OH. It is a colorless solid at room temperature and is one of three isomers of cresol (ortho-, meta-, and para-cresol).
p-Cresol is a naturally occurring compound found in coal tar and crude oil. It is also a component of the volatile emissions of certain plants and animals, and contributes to the aroma of cooked foods and some animal scents.
Industrially, p-Cresol is produced by the methylation of phenol or the separation of cresol isomers from coal tar.
p-Cresol has a variety of uses, including:
- Disinfectant and antiseptic: It possesses antimicrobial properties and is used in some disinfectant formulations.
- Chemical intermediate: It serves as a precursor in the synthesis of other chemicals, including antioxidants, herbicides, and pharmaceuticals.
- Solvent: It can be used as a solvent for certain organic compounds.
p-Cresol is considered a toxic substance. Exposure can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. It should be handled with appropriate precautions.
