Sunday Afolabi (politician)
Sunday Michael Afolabi (1940 – 2003) was a Nigerian politician who served as Minister of Internal Affairs under President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2003.
Afolabi was a prominent figure in the People's Democratic Party (PDP). Before his ministerial appointment, he held various political positions, contributing to the political landscape of Nigeria. His tenure as Minister of Internal Affairs was marked by both progress and controversy. He was involved in managing the nation's internal security and immigration policies.
Afolabi's career was later overshadowed by allegations of corruption related to the national identity card scheme. He was accused of receiving bribes in connection with the project. He died in 2003 while still under investigation for these alleged offenses. The investigation into the ID card scandal continued after his death.
Afolabi was a significant, although controversial, figure in the early years of Nigeria's Fourth Republic. His legacy is complex, reflecting both his contributions to government and the allegations of corruption that surrounded his later years.
