Ehatisaht

The Ehatisaht are a First Nations people located on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. They are part of the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) tribal council. Historically, the Ehatisaht controlled a large territory and were known for their skills in whaling, fishing, and woodworking. Their traditional territory includes the area around Esperanza Inlet. The Ehatisaht maintain a distinct cultural identity with their own unique traditions, language, and history, though these have been impacted by colonization and assimilation policies. They are actively involved in efforts to revitalize their language and culture, and to assert their rights and title to their traditional lands and resources. The modern Ehatisaht First Nation operates under a band government, managing community affairs and working towards self-determination.
