After retirement, he served as Professor of Theology at Regent College in Vancouver.

Helm's work is characterized by its rigorous philosophical analysis and its commitment to classical Reformed theology. He has engaged with contemporary philosophical debates from a distinctly theological perspective, seeking to articulate and defend traditional Christian beliefs in a philosophically sophisticated manner.

He has also written extensively on the theological implications of analytic philosophy.
