San Basilio (Rome)
San Basilio is a neighborhood (quartiere) located in the northeast periphery of Rome, Italy. It is designated as Quartiere XXX of Rome.
San Basilio is situated within Municipio IV (formerly Municipio V). The neighborhood developed significantly in the mid-20th century as a planned community to address Rome's growing population and housing needs. Characterized by public housing blocks, it initially aimed to provide affordable housing for working-class families.
While historically considered a working-class area, San Basilio has seen gradual changes in its socio-economic landscape over the years. It is connected to the rest of Rome via public transportation, including bus lines and the Rome Metro B line (Rebibbia station being a nearby access point).
The neighborhood takes its name from Saint Basil the Great. It features local amenities such as schools, parks, churches, and commercial establishments. Social and economic challenges, including unemployment and organized crime, have been observed within the area. Local initiatives and community programs are often active in addressing these issues.
