USS Tunny

The USS Tunny was the name of two submarines that served in the United States Navy.

  • USS Tunny (SS-282): A Gato-class submarine commissioned in 1942. She is notable for several successful war patrols during World War II, including the sinking of the Japanese aircraft carrier Taiho during the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944 and the sinking of the Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano in November 1944, then the largest aircraft carrier in the world. Tunny received eleven battle stars for her World War II service. She was decommissioned in 1945 and later converted to a radar picket submarine (SSR-282) in 1952 before being decommissioned again and struck from the Naval Vessel Register in 1969. She was subsequently sold for scrap.

  • USS Tunny (SSN-682): A Sturgeon-class nuclear-powered attack submarine commissioned in 1974. She served during the Cold War, participating in various exercises and deployments. Tunny was decommissioned in 1998 and subsequently scrapped as part of the Ship-Submarine Recycling Program.
