Sinarapan

Sinarapan (Misty goby, Mistichthys luzonensis) is a critically endangered species of goby endemic to the Philippines. It is the world's smallest commercially harvested fish and one of the smallest fish species overall.

Description:

Sinarapan are transparent gobies, typically reaching a maximum length of about 2.5 cm (1 inch). They are characterized by their small size and almost translucent appearance, making them difficult to see in the water. Their bodies are elongated and slender.

Habitat and Distribution:

This fish is native to Lake Buhi in Camarines Sur province, Luzon, Philippines. It has also been reported from the Bicol River system, which is connected to Lake Buhi. Due to its small size and specific habitat requirements, its distribution is severely restricted.

Ecology and Behavior:

Sinarapan form large schools in the shallow areas of Lake Buhi. They are primarily planktivorous, feeding on microscopic algae and zooplankton. The fish spawn year-round, with peak spawning occurring during the rainy season.

Conservation Status:

The Sinarapan is listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The primary threats to its survival include overfishing, habitat degradation (specifically the deterioration of water quality in Lake Buhi due to pollution and sedimentation), and the introduction of invasive species. The introduction of other fish species that compete for resources or prey on Sinarapan has significantly impacted its population. Conservation efforts are focused on managing fisheries sustainably, restoring Lake Buhi's ecosystem, and controlling invasive species.
