Flagstaff Lake (Maine)

Flagstaff Lake is a large artificial lake in northwestern Maine, United States, located in Somerset County. Created in 1950 by the impoundment of the Dead River by the Long Falls Dam, its primary purpose was to provide hydroelectric power. At full capacity, it is one of the largest lakes in Maine and the largest of the man-made lakes.

The lake submerged the former town of Flagstaff, along with several smaller settlements, and portions of neighboring towns. The residents of these communities were relocated prior to the flooding. The impoundment transformed the Dead River's character from a relatively free-flowing river known for its rapids to a large reservoir.

Flagstaff Lake is a popular destination for recreation, including boating, fishing, and camping. The Appalachian Trail passes nearby, offering hiking opportunities in the surrounding area. The lake's water level fluctuates significantly depending on power generation needs and seasonal variations. The irregular shoreline, dotted with islands and peninsulas, provides diverse habitats for wildlife. The lake is managed by the Brookfield Renewable Power.
