HMCS Giffard (K402)

HMCS Giffard (K402) was a River-class frigate of the Royal Canadian Navy that served during the Second World War. She was named for Henri Giffard, a French engineer and inventor of the powered airship.

Giffard was ordered in October 1941 as part of the 1942-43 building program. She was laid down on 16 June 1943 by Canadian Vickers Ltd. at Montreal and launched on 27 October 1943. Giffard was commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy on 21 July 1944 at Montreal.

Following commissioning, Giffard was assigned to escort group 9, which operated in the North Atlantic. She saw action escorting convoys between North America and the United Kingdom. During her service, she was credited with sharing in the sinking of the German submarine U-984 on 20 August 1944, along with HMCS Ottawa and HMS Statice.

After the war, Giffard was paid off on 17 November 1945 at Shelburne, Nova Scotia and placed in reserve. She was later sold for scrapping.
