Moyarta (barony)
Moyarta is a historical barony located in County Clare, Ireland. It formed part of the ancient territory of Corca Baiscinn. Geographically, it encompasses the southwestern portion of County Clare, including the Loop Head Peninsula.
The barony's name derives from an Irish placename, likely related to a person or family associated with the area. Historically, the barony was under the control of various Gaelic clans, including the O'Gorman and McMahon families.
Following the Norman invasion of Ireland and subsequent English rule, the barony became part of the administrative divisions imposed by the English. While the barony system has largely lost its administrative significance in modern Ireland, it remains a recognized historical division and is still used for certain land registry and historical research purposes.
The landscape of Moyarta is characterized by dramatic coastal scenery, including cliffs, beaches, and the Shannon Estuary. Agriculture, fishing, and tourism are important aspects of the local economy. Several small towns and villages are located within the boundaries of the barony, including Kilkee, Carrigaholt, and Kilrush.
