Broad Street (Manhattan)

Broad Street is a north-south street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan in New York City. It runs from Wall Street south to South Street, near the South Street Seaport.

Historically, Broad Street was a canal constructed by the Dutch in the 17th century, then known as "Heere Gracht" or "Gentlemen's Canal." This canal served as a waterway for commerce and transportation, connecting the East River to the city's center. In 1676, it was paved over and transformed into a wide street, hence the name "Broad Street."

Today, Broad Street is home to several significant buildings, including the New York Stock Exchange Building at 20 Broad Street, although the exchange's primary entrance is on Wall Street. It is also a location for numerous financial institutions, corporate headquarters, and office spaces. The street is heavily trafficked by pedestrians, particularly during business hours.

Broad Street is a key part of the Financial District's street grid and plays an important role in the area's transportation network, serving as a conduit for vehicles and pedestrians. Its history as a former canal gives it a unique character that distinguishes it from other streets in the neighborhood. The street also hosts public art installations and community events from time to time.
