Metrobus (Sydney)

Metrobus was a high-frequency, limited-stop bus service operating in Sydney, Australia. Introduced in 2008 by State Transit, it aimed to provide faster and more direct connections across key routes, supplementing existing all-stops bus services. Metrobus routes were identifiable by their distinctive red branding and the letter "M" preceding their route number (e.g., M10, M20).

Key features of Metrobus included:

  • High Frequency: Services operated frequently throughout the day, typically every 10-20 minutes during peak hours and every 20-30 minutes during off-peak hours.
  • Limited Stops: Metrobus services only stopped at major interchanges and high-demand locations, reducing travel time compared to all-stops routes.
  • Extended Operating Hours: Many Metrobus routes operated from early morning to late night, offering a longer span of service than some regular bus routes.
  • Real-Time Information: Passengers could access real-time information about Metrobus arrival times through various channels, including the Transport NSW website and mobile apps.
  • Route Network: The Metrobus network initially comprised several routes connecting key areas of Sydney, including the CBD, inner west, northern suburbs, and eastern suburbs. The network was gradually expanded over time.
  • Service Discontinuation: From 2023, the Metrobus branding and service model were discontinued by Transport for NSW. Many of the routes formerly designated as Metrobus continue to operate, often with altered stopping patterns, under standard route numbers within the broader Sydney bus network. While the characteristic red buses were phased out, some existing buses retain their Metrobus red livery for a transitional period.
