Pal (dog)
Pal was the name of a male Rough Collie dog actor best known for playing Lassie in the 1943 MGM film Lassie Come Home, and in six subsequent Lassie films. He was owned and trained by Rudd Weatherwax.
Early Life:
Pal was born in June 1940 and initially deemed untrainable due to his rough temperament. Weatherwax acquired Pal as payment for training another dog.
Career:
Pal rose to fame as Lassie, selected for the role after the original dog cast for the part proved unsuitable for long swims. His performance in Lassie Come Home launched a successful film franchise. Although all subsequent Lassies were advertised as Pal's direct descendants, several were not actually related to him. The dogs trained by Weatherwax and his son Robert following Pal's death still maintained the "Lassie" image.
Legacy:
Pal's portrayal of Lassie established a popular and enduring image of the Collie breed. He is considered one of the most famous animal actors in history. His name remains synonymous with the character Lassie, even decades after his death.
Death:
Pal died in June 1958 at the age of 18. His death was reportedly mourned by his owner and trainer, Rudd Weatherwax.
