Wameru

The Wameru, also known as the Meru people, are a Bantu ethnic group primarily residing in the Meru region of Kenya, on the fertile slopes of Mount Kenya. They are one of Kenya's largest ethnic groups and speak the Kimeru language, a Bantu language.

The Meru people trace their origins to the coast of Kenya and Somalia, migrating inland over several centuries. Oral traditions recount a journey from a place called "Mbwaa," often associated with the coastal regions. They eventually settled around Mount Kenya, gradually expanding and forming distinct sub-tribes, each with its own dialect and customs.

Agriculture is central to the Meru economy, with coffee, tea, maize, beans, and bananas being important crops. Livestock keeping, particularly cattle, also plays a significant role in their livelihoods.

The Meru society traditionally held a hierarchical structure, with elders playing a crucial role in decision-making and governance. Traditional religious beliefs centered on a supreme God, known as Murungu, and a belief in ancestral spirits.

Modern Meru society has seen significant changes, with increased participation in education, politics, and the national economy. While traditional customs and beliefs remain important, they are increasingly influenced by Christianity and modern lifestyles. The Meru people have made significant contributions to Kenya's development in various fields, including politics, education, and business.
