Norman Lewis (artist)

Norman Lewis (July 23, 1909 – August 27, 1979) was an American painter, teacher, and one of the leading figures of Abstract Expressionism. Born in Harlem, New York City, Lewis was one of the few African American artists to achieve prominence within the movement.

Lewis's artistic style evolved throughout his career, beginning with social realism in the 1930s, depicting scenes of urban life and social injustice. He later transitioned towards abstraction in the 1940s and 1950s, exploring the possibilities of color, line, and form. His abstract works often featured layered compositions and a lyrical, atmospheric quality. While associated with Abstract Expressionism, Lewis's work also incorporated elements of Surrealism and social commentary, reflecting his personal experiences and observations.

Lewis was deeply committed to social justice and racial equality. This commitment was reflected in his art, albeit often subtly in his later abstract work. He was involved in various artist organizations and advocated for greater recognition and opportunities for African American artists. He was a member of Spiral, a group of Black artists who convened in the 1960s to discuss their role in the Civil Rights movement and the art world.

Lewis's work is included in the collections of numerous major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Despite his significant contributions to American art, Lewis's work was often overlooked during his lifetime. He has since received greater recognition for his innovative and influential artistic practice. His legacy continues to inspire artists and scholars interested in the intersection of art, race, and social change.
