Helier is a given name of Breton origin, primarily used as a male name. It is derived from the Breton elements hael meaning "generous" or "noble," and ler meaning "army" or "people." Thus, Helier can be interpreted to mean "generous leader of the people" or "noble warrior."

The name is strongly associated with Saint Helier, also known as Helerius, a 6th-century hermit considered the patron saint of Jersey in the Channel Islands. According to tradition, Saint Helier was martyred on the island and his hermitage, still visible at low tide, is a place of pilgrimage.
