Charles Jones (Australian politician)
Charles Jones (14 September 1917 – 25 December 2003) was an Australian politician who served as a Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1958 to 1983, representing the Division of Newcastle, New South Wales. He served as Minister for Transport and Minister for Civil Aviation in the Whitlam Government from 1972 to 1975.
Born in Lambton, New South Wales, Jones worked as a fitter and turner before entering politics. He was active in the trade union movement, holding positions in the Amalgamated Engineering Union.
Entering federal parliament at the 1958 election, Jones was a strong advocate for the interests of Newcastle and the Hunter Region. During his time as Minister for Transport, he oversaw significant developments in Australian aviation and shipping. Key policy initiatives included the expansion of domestic airline routes, the modernization of airport infrastructure, and efforts to improve maritime safety.
Following the dismissal of the Whitlam government in 1975, Jones served as a Shadow Minister. He retired from parliament at the 1983 election. He was known for his direct and forthright style of communication. His contribution to infrastructure development and his representation of the Newcastle region are considered significant aspects of his political career. He died in Newcastle on Christmas Day 2003.
