Johnny Doyle (Scottish footballer)
Johnny Doyle (17 January 1951 – 19 October 1981) was a Scottish professional footballer, primarily a right winger. He is best known for his time playing for Celtic Football Club in the late 1970s.
Doyle began his senior career with Scottish Junior side Viewpark. In 1972, he moved to Ayr United, where he quickly established himself as a talented and exciting player. His performances attracted the attention of larger clubs, and in 1976 he signed for Celtic.
At Celtic Park, Doyle became a popular figure among the fans, known for his energetic displays, attacking flair, and commitment to the team. He was part of the Celtic team that won the Scottish Premier Division title in 1977 and 1979, and the Scottish Cup in 1977 and 1980. He played alongside notable players such as Danny McGrain, Kenny Dalglish (briefly before Dalglish's transfer to Liverpool), and Roy Aitken.
Doyle was also capped five times for Scotland, making his international debut in 1976.
Following his time at Celtic, Doyle played for several other clubs, including Norwich City in England, and briefly with Dumbarton in Scotland. He later returned to Ayr United.
Tragically, Johnny Doyle died suddenly on 19 October 1981, at the age of 30, from an accidental fall at his home. His early death shocked the Scottish football community, and he is remembered as a talented and popular player who was taken too soon. He remains a celebrated figure in the history of Celtic Football Club and Scottish football more broadly.
